Norton 360 Blocks Microsoft Virtual Server

by David Leibowitz | January 2, 2008 | Comments: 1

Norton Internet Security 2006 used to pop up with a rule whenever it noticed new traffic or an application on your computer . It appears that 360 is not as intelligent. So out of the box it blocks Microsoft Virtual Server and doesn't ask you to customize. Either you cannot connect to your VMs, or you you'll get disconnected quite often.

To enable access to VMRC with Norton 360:
1) Go to the Administration Panel, then Tasks & Settings
2) Find Firewall Protection Settings and select the Firewall Program Rules tab
3) Find the Program VMRC in the list. It should be set to "Custom" by default.
4) Select it and click the Modify button
5) In Modify rule, select the Connections tab and click "Connections to and from"
6) On the Computers tab, I limited access to my laptop
7) On the Communications tab, select TCP and UDP then open the following ports:
53, 80, 5900, 1024, 135, 3183, 137

8) Click OK and Save

I am a total novice when it comes to computer technology, but need help because I am having trouble accessing my firm's outlook express e-mail program from my home PC (using MS VISTA).  When i go to the url for the firm, I get a message saying that connection is not recommended.  If I enter anyway, I can read email messages but cannot reply or forward, etc.  We have Norton 360 installed on the PC, so I assume it's a firewall problem.  Any help in adjusting the firewall rules to allow complete access to the email program would be appreciated.  Thanks.
